Regional scores, recomputed

Regional scores are recomputed from member-country figures: factbook population and official-exchange-rate GDP, and sourced resource shares. Peace and industrialization show n/a (incomplete) because per-country GPI and MVA-per-capita series are not yet in the Bureau's data. Resource shares are floors from sourced top holders only, never totals that pretend to be complete.

Peace: n/a (incomplete). No per-country peace score series is held in the Bureau's data yet, so no regional peace figure is published. A missing series is never replaced by a proxy.

Industrialization depth: n/a (incomplete). No per-country manufacturing-value-added per capita series is held in the Bureau's data yet, so no regional industrialization figure is published. GDP per capita is prosperity, not manufacturing depth, and is never substituted for it.

Liquefaction capacity: USA 97.5 MTPA, Australia 87.6, Qatar 77.1 (world 494.4 MTPA). EIA: USA exported 11.9 bcf/d in 2024; Europe took 53% of US LNG, Asia 33%.

Friction: where things grind (conflict, sanction, blockade, dispute, export control, policy shock, disrupted corridor, extreme concentration under interference). Smooth: where things flow easily (a working corridor at volume, a functioning coordination, a fallback absorbing diverted flow). Sweet spot: where the flow is optimal (a vertically integrated solution chain, or the deepest institutional integration). Ease: where movement is easiest (contiguous, integrated, or borderless movement with no policy barrier).

Friction

China rare-earth export controls

April 2025: controls on 7 heavy rare earths + the magnets made from them. October 2025: expanded to foreign-made products containing Chinese rare earths (5 more elements added: holmium, erbium, thulium, europium, ytterbium). November 2025 (Busan summit): the broadest measures paused, the licensing system kept. The flow at stake is the ~90% of world refining (H03).

Source: Chinese export-control measures 2025 (as reported by IEA July 2026 assessment and USGS-based coverage) (Vintage 2025, I01). A licensing gate on a ~90%-concentrated refining flow: the supplier can throttle the world's magnet, EV, wind and defence production by paperwork alone. IEA (July 2026): the concentration leaves trillions of dollars of manufacturing outside China exposed to a single country's licensing decisions.

Friction

Brazil fertilizer import exposure

Brazil is one of the world's largest fertilizer consumers and importers, with acidic soils and heavy reliance on imported fertilizer; supply disruptions pushed fertilizer prices to ~$900/t from pre-COVID ~$300/t. The exposure is structural: the country that feeds the world on soy and beef cannot feed its own soil without imports.

Source: Fertilizer-price and Brazil-import reporting (USGS-context coverage) (Vintage 2024–2025, I03). A food-producing giant that cannot produce its own fertilizer at scale: every phosphate, potash or nitrogen shock lands directly on Brazilian farm margins and, through them, on world food prices.

Friction

DRC cobalt → China refining chain

DRC mines ~74-76% of world cobalt (H12); China refines ~76-79%. CMOC (China) went from 55,000 t (2023) to 114,000 t (2024) and became the world's top cobalt supplier. Since 2020, nearly 100 export-related measures have been introduced on critical minerals; DRC, China and Indonesia are among the most active users (UNCTAD).

Source: IEA Critical Minerals Outlook 2026; UNCTAD critical-minerals trade analysis 2025 (Vintage 2023–2025, I04). Double concentration (mine + refining) plus active export-measure use on both ends: the chain grinds whenever either end moves policy, and downstream buyers (batteries, superalloys) have no short-term alternative.

Friction

Indonesia nickel export limits

Indonesia holds 55% of world nickel mine production and 44% of reserves (H13) and has used nickel export limits as policy; buyers over-ordered metals in response, and lithium prices rose ~450% between 2021 and 2022 despite a 35% production increase in a parallel resource-nationalism episode (the pattern, not a nickel price claim).

Source: IEA (shares); export-limit episode reporting (Vintage 2021–2024, I05). A dominant miner using export limits as industrial policy: buyers cannot plan on the flow, so they hoard, which amplifies the very volatility the limits create.

Friction

Lithium Triangle → China refining chain

Triangle holds >50-60% of world lithium reserves (H14); China refines 65%. Chile's 2023 move to nationalize lithium assets triggered a 22% lithium carbonate price spike within a month. China owns or funds much of the Triangle's processing and refining despite owning little lithium itself.

Source: IEA (shares); USGS (triangle reserves); Chile policy episode reporting (Vintage 2023–2024, I07). Reserves sit in three countries, refining in one: any policy move at either end reprices the whole battery chain within weeks (Chile 2023: +22% in a month).

Friction

Russia oil/gas → India/China redirection

After the Ukraine war and Western sanctions, Russia redirected much of its oil exports to India and China (production 10.8M b/d in 2024, H07, sustained despite sanctions). Russian LNG still reached Europe in early 2024 (Spain, France, Belgium the main markets; Russian LNG plants at 29.3 MTPA capacity running above nameplate).

Source: Sanctions-rerouting reporting (EIA/OPEC-context); GECF monthly gas market report (Mar 2024) for LNG (Vintage 2022–2024, I10). The flow survives but only by rerouting around sanctions: longer voyages, discounted barrels, intermediary traders, and payment friction. It grinds; it does not flow freely.

Friction

Bab el-Mandeb + Suez Canal / SUMED

Bab el-Mandeb: 9.3M b/d (2023) → 4.1M b/d (2024) → 4.2M b/d (1H25). Suez + SUMED: 8.8M b/d (2023) → 4.8M b/d (2024) → 4.9M b/d (1H25). The paired collapse is the Red Sea disruption; the diverted volume reappears at the Cape of Good Hope (I14).

Source: EIA Short-Term Energy Outlook (Feb 2026), Vortexa tanker tracking (Vintage 2023–1H25 (EIA), I13). A corridor cut roughly in half in one year: the textbook friction point, a working route that stopped working, with costs (time, insurance, freight) imposed on every diverted barrel.

Smooth

US LNG → Europe corridor

Europe took 53% of US LNG exports in 2024 (EIA); the Netherlands, France and the UK together took 46% of Europe's share. The USA is the world's #1 LNG exporter (88.42M t, 21.5%, 2024, H20). The corridor is the post-2022 diversification route away from Russian pipeline gas.

Source: EIA (US LNG by destination, 2024); IGU World LNG Report 2025 (Vintage 2024, I08). A working corridor at scale: contracted, terminal-backed, flowing every month, with spare liquefaction capacity behind it (USA 97.5 MTPA nameplate).

Smooth

Cape of Good Hope (fallback route)

9.1M b/d in 1H25 (11.4% of world maritime oil trade), up from 6.2M b/d in 2023, absorbing the volume diverted from Bab el-Mandeb/Suez (I13).

Source: EIA Short-Term Energy Outlook (Feb 2026), Vortexa tanker tracking (Vintage 1H25 (EIA), I14). A functioning fallback: longer and costlier than Suez, so not an ease point, but it flows, it absorbed the shock, and it kept the oil moving. Smooth, not ease, is the honest class.

Smooth

Danish Straits + Turkish Straits

Danish Straits 4.9M b/d (1H25, excl. Kiel Canal); Turkish Straits (Dardanelles) 3.7M b/d (1H25). Both steady across 2020-1H25 (Danish 3.1→4.9M; Turkish 3.2→3.7M).

Source: EIA Short-Term Energy Outlook (Feb 2026), Vortexa tanker tracking (Vintage 1H25 (EIA), I16). Steady treaty-regulated transit at volume; no current disruption in the sourced window.

Smooth

BRICS

10 confirmed full members (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, UAE, Indonesia, Indonesia joined Jan 2025). Saudi Arabia is listed by BRICS/India's 2026 presidency as an 11th member but has never publicly confirmed acceptance (Reuters, May 2025: Riyadh 'held off formally joining'), treated here as DISPUTED, not confirmed. ~10 partner countries (Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan, Vietnam). Decisions by consensus. Institutions: New Development Bank (NDB), Contingent Reserve Arrangement (CRA). 2026 chair: India (18th summit, New Delhi, 12-13 Sep 2026; focus: supply-chain resilience, cross-border payments, national currencies for trade). What BRICS is NOT: a common currency, the 2026 chairship's mechanism is a cross-border payment framework linking national systems for local-currency settlement, explicitly not a single currency.

Source: BRICS official materials / India's 2026 presidency communications; Reuters (May 2025) on Saudi Arabia (Vintage 2026 (India chairship), I17). The bloc coordinates (summits, NDB, CRA, payment framework) and meets, it functions. Strains (analytical, not sourced as events): India-China rivalry inside the tent, divergent interests across 10+ economies, the unresolved Saudi membership, and consensus decision-making that slows joint action. Smooth with strains, not sweet, not friction.

Sweet spot

NATO

32 members (30 Europe + 2 North America). Founded 4 April 1949 (Washington Treaty). Article 5 collective defence: an armed attack on one member is an attack on all, invoked exactly once, after 9/11. Decisions by consensus in the North Atlantic Council. HQ Brussels; Secretary-General Mark Rutte (since Oct 2024). Newest members: Finland (2023), Sweden (Mar 2024).

Source: North Atlantic Treaty (1949); NATO membership record (Vintage 2026, I18). The deepest security integration in the design: binding treaty + integrated command + a proven invocation + consensus discipline. The flow (collective defence coordination) is optimal for its purpose.

Sweet spot

European Union

27 members. Partly supranational, partly intergovernmental; single market + law + common policies; Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) with a mutual-defence clause (Art 42(7) TEU). EU-NATO overlap: 23 states are members of both; 4 EU states are non-NATO (Austria, Cyprus, Ireland, Malta); 4 NATO members are EU applicants (Albania, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Turkey); the UK is a former EU member; Iceland and Norway are in the EEA/Single Market but not the EU.

Source: Treaty on European Union; EU-NATO membership record (Vintage 2026, I19). The deepest economic + political integration in the design: goods, services, capital and people move under one legal order. The flow is optimal for its purpose.

Ease

Intra-EU single-market movement

Within the EU single market, goods, services, capital and people move under one legal order without internal borders, the definitional property of the single market (see I19 for membership and legal basis).

Source: EU single-market legal order (Treaty basis; see I19 provenance) (Vintage 2026, I21). Borderless by law: no customs, no tariffs, no border controls inside the market. The easiest movement in the design, which is exactly why the EU row is sweet (integration) and its internal flows are ease (movement).
