Why it matters

Five years after the coup, the junta still holds the center — and little else.
The economy is a casualty: the kyat collapsed, trade shrank to sanctioned lifelines.
Leaned on China and Russia for arms and diplomatic cover.
A nationwide resistance now contests large rural areas; the war grinds on with no exit.
