Why it matters

Set up an anti-corruption unit and polygraph-tested ministers; dismissed the PM and dissolved government March 2026; reform delivery lags promises.
Nickel/cobalt (Ambatovy) and ilmenite projects predate him; no new megaprojects under the transition.
At least 22 killed in the 2025 unrest; post-coup arrests of activists; same-old-tactics accusations from the movement that brought him in.
AU suspended; SADC and UN press for civilian return; donor relations strained by the unconstitutional change.
