Why it matters

Stabilized Congo after the 1990s civil wars and built Brazzaville's infrastructure; oil wealth sustained the state but not development.
Oil-dependent; debt distress episodes required IMF restructuring; diversification into agriculture and timber is slow.
Dynastic succession dynamics (son Denis Christel in government); youth excluded from a gerontocratic patronage system.
French oil ties (TotalEnergies) alongside Russian and Chinese engagement; CEMAC and AU roles; mediator in regional crises.
