Why it matters

Won independence and the 2018 peace with Ethiopia (Nobel-adjacent moment), then squandered it by joining the Tigray war.
Colluli potash project long-delayed; Massawa port underutilized; no major completed megaprojects under Afwerki.
UN commissions document crimes against humanity: indefinite national service as forced labor, torture, disappearances; Tigray war atrocities by Eritrean troops.
Isolated: sanctioned by the US; frosty with Ethiopia post-Tigray; Red Sea mining ties with China; limited Gulf links.
