Why it matters

Peaceful democratic alternation itself is the achievement; renegotiated the De Beers diamond deal for better state terms.
Diamond downturn squeezed revenues in 2024–2025; diversification into tourism, finance, and energy is the stated fix.
Pledged jobs and economic inclusion for youth; early days — delivery on diversification will define the mandate.
Positions Botswana as Africa's democratic exemplar under new management — reformist lawyer-president diversifying beyond diamonds.
