Why it matters

Built modern infrastructure (Sipopo, Bata) from oil wealth; presided over one of Africa's highest GDP per capita figures — captured by the elite.
Oil production in long decline; gas (Alen, Aseng) the remaining pillar; diversification talk exceeds action.
Torture, arbitrary detention, and sham elections documented for decades; opposition effectively banned; French courts convicted the vice-president of embezzlement.
Oil ties with US firms (ExxonMobil, Marathon); OPEC member; AU roles; French legal pressure over ill-gotten assets.
