The 100 Greatest Scientists, Ranked

From the first experimenters to the mappers of DNA and the cosmos — one hundred scientists scored across twelve causal dimensions, from breakthrough to consequence, ranked by scientific score.

← All history reports

How the ranking works: every scientist is scored 1 to 10 across twelve dimensions in a causal chain — breakthrough → knowledge → consequence. Three dimensions measure the breakthrough (originality of the discovery, paradigm shift, counterfactual significance — how long science would have waited without them); four measure the knowledge added (theoretical contribution, experimental and observational contribution, new methods and instruments, breadth across fields); five measure the consequence (fields founded, downstream discoveries enabled, technological and practical applications, durability, reach into human lives). The breakthrough counts most — half the total: what a scientist discovered is weighed separately from what later generations built from it. The three block scores combine into a scientific score out of 100. The order follows the scores; no position is arranged.
