Vladimir Ulyanov — who took the name Lenin — was born in 1870 in Simbirsk, into a respectable family of the Russian intelligentsia. The hinge of his life came in 1887, when his elder brother Alexander was hanged for plotting to assassinate the tsar; Lenin, then seventeen, turned from grief to a cold, lifelong resolve. Expelled from university, he taught himself Marxism in exile and in Siberian banishment, and by 1902, with What Is to Be Done?, he had remade revolutionary doctrine: the working class, left to itself, would develop only trade-union consciousness; it needed a vanguard party of professional revolutionaries, disciplined, centralized, conspiratorial, to bring it socialist consciousness. Democratic centralism — free debate, then iron unity in action — became the organizational DNA of every communist party on earth.
The test came in 1917. Russia was collapsing under the strain of the First World War; the tsar had abdicated in February; the Provisional Government stumbled on. Lenin, smuggled back from Swiss exile by the Germans in a sealed train — the Kaiser's gamble that revolution would knock Russia out of the war — arrived at the Finland Station in April and issued the April Theses: no support for the Provisional Government, all power to the soviets. His colleagues thought him mad; within six months the Bolsheviks, promising "peace, land, and bread," seized power in the October Revolution — a coup as much as a revolution, carried out in the name of the soviets and consolidated by force.
What followed was the founding act of the twentieth century's other superpower. Lenin built the one-party state: the soviets hollowed out, the Constituent Assembly dispersed at gunpoint when it voted wrong in January 1918, the Cheka terror, the Red Terror, the civil war won by Trotsky's Red Army at the cost of millions dead. He was also tactically supple: when War Communism brought famine and revolt, he retreated to the New Economic Policy in 1921, restoring limited markets to save the regime. He died in 1924, after strokes had removed him from power, with Stalin already maneuvering for the succession.
Lenin's achievement and crime are inseparable. He proved that a disciplined minority could seize a collapsing state and hold it — the model for every twentieth-century revolution from China to Cuba. He created the institutional template of the party-state: vanguard party, democratic centralism, the planned seizure of power, the dictatorship exercised in the proletariat's name. The Soviet Union he founded would shape world history for seventy years, and the communist parties he inspired governed a third of humanity at their peak. The cost — terror as method, the party as master, the soviets as fiction — was written into the design from the Finland Station onward.
Impact on civilization
Lenin created the institutional template of twentieth-century revolution: the vanguard party, democratic centralism, and the strategy of seizing state power in a moment of collapse became the operating manual for communist movements on every continent, from Mao's China to Castro's Cuba to guerrilla movements in Africa and Asia. The October Revolution founded the Soviet Union, the twentieth century's second superpower, whose existence structured global politics — the Cold War, the arms race, decolonization, the welfare-state compromises of the West — for seventy years. His doctrine that imperialism was capitalism's highest stage gave anti-colonial movements a theoretical framework, fusing nationalism with socialism across the developing world. The Comintern exported his organizational model worldwide, creating disciplined parties that outlived him by generations. Negatively, he normalized the one-party state, the secret police, and terror as instruments of rule — the party-state he built became the template for totalitarian governance everywhere. Whether as inspiration or warning, no political figure of the twentieth century shaped more governments.
