Who was Ibn al-Haytham?

A thousand years ago in Cairo, a Basra-born scholar locked light in a dark room and made it confess. The scientific method begins with him.

The short answer

Around the year 1000, in Cairo, a scholar from Basra did something no one had done before: he stopped arguing about light and started testing it. Ibn al-Haytham built dark rooms, bored pinholes in their walls, and watched images form where no image should be — then wrote the Book of Optics, the founding document of experimental science, six centuries before the word ‘scientist’ existed.
