Who was Ashoka the Great?

A slaughter at Kalinga broke a conqueror — and rebuilt him as history's first apostle of non-violence: the emperor who wrote his conscience in stone.

He won the greatest victory of his life — and it broke him. At Kalinga, around 261 BC, Ashoka looked at what conquest had cost and chose to become someone else entirely: history’s first ruler to govern by conscience, in public, in stone.
