Who invented the compass?

A magnetized needle floating in a bowl of water freed sailors from the sight of land — and opened the ocean to the age of exploration.

The short answer

For most of human history, the sea was a wall you hugged. Sailors navigated by the coastline the way children navigate by holding a parent’s hand — lose sight of land and you were lost, probably forever. Then a sliver of magnetized iron in a bowl of water quietly cut the leash.
