What was the Zulu Kingdom?

One man’s military revolution forged a kingdom in a decade. Shaka’s Zulu — the short stabbing spear, the buffalo-horns formation, the standing regiments — redrew the map of southern Africa, then gave the British Empire one of the worst days in its military history.

Out went the long throwing spear; in came the iklwa, the short stabbing spear for close combat. Out went the sandals, so his warriors could run fifty kilometers a day. Out went the loose war bands; in came the amabutho, age-grade regiments drilled into a standing army. And over it all, the tactics: the “buffalo horns” — a central chest to pin the enemy, two horns to encircle, the loins in reserve.
