What was the Venetian Empire?

No legions, no kings, no vast conscript armies — just ships, contracts, and the best accountants in history. Venice built an empire out of invoices, ruled it from counting houses, and held it for a thousand years. It was the first great power that ran on capitalism rather than cavalry.

Tradition dates the first doge to 697, and the young republic made its fortune as the middleman between Byzantium and the West — buying Eastern luxuries, selling timber, salt, and ships. By the eleventh century Venetian merchants were everywhere money changed hands.
