What was the Songhai Empire?

The largest empire West Africa ever saw was also its most learned. Songhai stretched some 1.4 million square kilometers along the Niger — and at its heart stood Timbuktu, where books were worth more than gold and scholars outranked generals.

Then came Sunni Ali (r. 1464–1492), a commander of ferocious energy who broke the vassalage and spent twenty-eight years campaigning: Timbuktu in 1468, Djenné in 1473, and with them the Niger bend’s great cities. He was feared, he was effective, and the chroniclers — devout Muslims writing after his death — never forgave him his unorthodoxy.
