What was the Song Dynasty?

The Song governed the richest, most populous, most technologically advanced society on earth — with paper money, gunpowder weapons, movable type, and a merchant class richer than kings. It was an industrial revolution that arrived four centuries before the one Europe claims as its own. And then it vanished.
