What was the Scientific Revolution?

In 1543 Copernicus moved the Earth; in 1687 Newton explained why it moves. Between them, humanity invented something greater than any planet: the scientific method.

The short answer

For 1,400 years, educated people knew exactly where they stood: at the center of the universe, with the heavens wheeling obediently around them. Then, in 144 years, a Pole, an Italian, a German, and an Englishman took the Earth off its throne — and put method on it.
