What was the Kingdom of Kongo?

For three centuries, Central Africa’s great kingdom dealt with Europe on equal terms: its kings wrote Latin letters to the Pope, its ambassadors walked the courts of Lisbon and Rome, and its currency — the nzimbu shell — was as standardized as any coin. Then the Atlantic slave trade turned the relationship into a wound.
