What was the Battle of the Three Kings?

The Battle of the Three Kings, fought on 4 August 1578 at Alcácer Quibir, made modern Morocco. The Saadian army of Sultan Abd al-Malik annihilated a Portuguese crusade led by the young King Sebastian. By evening, all three kings who had taken the field — Sebastian, Abd al-Malik, and the rival claimant Abu Abdallah — were dead.

The short answer

The crusade was the folly of Sebastian I, a twenty-four-year-old king dreaming of a new Reconquista. Sebastian landed with the flower of Portuguese nobility; on the banks of the Oued al-Makhazin, Abd al-Malik's battle-hardened troops closed the trap. Portugal lost a king, an army, and, within two years, its independence.
