American politics, Washington explainers, and the afternoon newsletter.
I explain American politics to people who don’t live in Washington — which is most people, and exactly the audience that matters. Since May 2015 I have been a politics reporter and newsletter author at The Washington Post, writing explainers on political news and authoring the weekday afternoon newsletter “The 5-Minute Fix.” My rule: if a reader outside the Beltway can’t follow it, it’s not finished.
What shaped my lens: a decade of translating Washington’s strangest habits into plain English — on the page, and regularly on CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, CBS, and local television and radio. Before the Post, I covered Capitol Hill as the Washington correspondent for the Las Vegas Sun, reported national politics for Digital First Media, filed radio for Monocle24, and served as a special Taiwan correspondent — reporting from Taipei, where I interviewed Taiwan’s president.
Based in Washington, DC, I cover American politics and Washington explainers.

English is my native language; I am conversational in Spanish and my Chinese is elementary. Bylines in Monocle Magazine and Foreign Policy.
