Frequently Asked Questions
How are country rankings calculated?
Each nation is scored 0 to 100 across nine components — absolute mass, strategic capability, strategic leverage, power conversion, resilience, reach, sovereignty, institutional position and trajectory. The full model combines 135 indicators through multiplicative operators and is described in detail on the Methodology page. The scores published here are the model run of 3 October 2026.
How often are the rankings updated?
The published scores are a snapshot, not a live feed: they are the latest published calculation under the National Power methodology, dated 3 October 2026. When a new model run is published, the grades board carries the current scores. Scores should not be compared across runs as if they were a time series, because data vintages and the model itself can change between runs.
What do the nine components of national power measure?
Each component captures a distinct dimension of structural national power, from absolute mass and strategic capability to resilience, reach, sovereignty, institutional position and trajectory. Together they form the Magna Power score, the Bureau’s 0–100 composite of structural national power. Every score on the grades board carries a plain-language explanation — expand any row to see the reasoning behind it.
What does a dash mean in the rankings?
A dash means the data is missing, not zero. Where a component has no data for a country, the model applies no adjustment rather than a zero, and the board shows a dash. Missing data is treated as missing, never as zero.
Which ranking should I start with?
Start with overall national power, which scores all 195 nations 0 to 100 and shows the top 20 plus every country A to Z. Then explore the military power index, the deployments index, the arms-producer index and the leaders ranking. Each index links to full profiles for the countries, producers and leaders it lists.
Do the rankings cover every country?
The overall national-power ranking covers all 195 nations. Coverage varies by index: 162 countries are ranked by active military personnel, 82 countries have forces stationed abroad, and 72 major arms producers are profiled. The leaders ranking covers every eligible head of government — president, prime minister or chancellor.
