What did ancient Greece invent?

In one city-state, power stopped belonging to kings and started belonging to citizens. Athens invented democracy — and the argument has never stopped.

The short answer

Sometime around 508 BC, in a city beneath the Acropolis, a radical idea took hold: that ordinary men — farmers, potters, rowers — could rule themselves. It was called demokratia: power to the people. The experiment lasted barely two centuries. Its shockwave has lasted twenty-five.
